Removing Broken Floor Tile

There are a couple steps to replacing bad floor tile and the universal Dremel Multi-Max can help you with them all.

For this project you'll need the Dremel Multi-Max oscillating tool and we're using the one-eighth inch ground blade, the MM500. For smaller grout lines you can also use the MM501 which is a one-sixteenth inch crop blade. In the final step we'll also be using the MM900 Diamond Paper. To begin, insert the grout blade into the tool angling the blades so you can access all four sides of the broken tile. Tighten the screw with your allen wrench to secure the blade in the holder. For hard set grout set your tool to the maximum speed. Softer, less set grout can be worked from the medium speed. It's better to adjust your speed than your pressure. Harder grout may also take more passes for complete removal. Keep the blade at a right angle to the floor being careful not to knock the remaining good tile. Remove all the old tile and dust. Continue working away remaining grout. Now you're ready to remove the remaining thin set material with the diamond coated accessory MM900. Attach the sanding pad and diamond paper with the sander flat to the floor, work any old material dusting several times throughout. By removing the excess material this will allow the new tile to sit flush with the other tiles. Once the surface is clean to the sub floor remove any dust with a wet sponge. Now your new tile is ready to be affixed ungrounded.

Here are some more thoughts on removing broken tile. In some instances with denser tile you'll need to use a chisel or mini pry-bar to help lift the broken tile. In this case be careful not to knick or damage the surrounding good tile.
